Here’s 5 Reasons We’ve Been Gaining Weight At Work And The Ways We Plan To Fix It

Unless you’re gifted with amazing metabolism, you’ve definitely gained some weight after working. The thing is, our the lifestyle changes after we begin going to work, and mostly, it’s not for the better. Sitting for long hours can affect your health, appetite, and posture.
Here are some reasons why the weight gain happens way faster and easier when you’re at work.
#1 Hours of sitting
You spend 8 hours a day at work on average. Most of your day is spent sitting around. Little/no physical activity leads to weight gain. Research showed the people who walk or stand throughout the day burn more calories. Sitting and obesity have proven to have a link.
What you can do: Make sure you take walks after lunch, even if it’s for 10 mins.
#2 On-the-job stress
High levels of stress hormone can trigger fat and sugar craving. Frances Largeman-Roth, RD, author of Eating in Color has said –
“You may also feel like you need to forget healthy habits in order to get ahead,” says “Maybe you used to go for a walk at lunch but then you change jobs or get a promotion, and suddenly all eyes are on you,” she says. “You may feel like your daily break from the office is no longer acceptable, so you put in the extra time and your weight suffers.”
What you can do: If your boss is at you, take it lightly. There’s nothing to be gained by stressing out, except weight.
#3 Ordering in
Most of the time, you tend to order junk food with a bunch of other colleagues. Why? Because we have this need to fit in. Largeman-Roth has addressed this as well –
“You want to fit in—no one wants to be known as the girl who only eats tofu or drinks green smoothies, so you go along with the crowd even if it’s not what you’d normally order,”
What you can do: Plan your meals weekly. Indulge in healthy options and keep them at work to avoid over-eating.
#4 The temperature and lighting at work
The light and the temperature in the room affects your appetite. If you work in a dark and cold setting, it boosts your appetite.
What you can do: In case it is cold in your office, the only solution is to wear your favourite sweater and go for quick walks. You can also discuss your environment with admin for a more permanent fix.
#5 Working after hours.
When you are supposed to be leaving at 6, you end up leaving at 8. The reasons might be stress or passion or whatever. Extra hours can only harm you in the long run.
What you can do: Get up and join a gym or go for a walk after your work hours. Don’t forget to sleep well.
