Ever Wondered What Happens To The Costumes After Bollywood Films Are Done And Dusted?

What happened to Raj’s jacket from DDLJ or Leela’s ghagra from Ram Leela?

Whatever Bollywood actors do or wear on screen influences every Bollywood lover’s life! The clothes, the characters, and the actors are all admired to an extent that we’ll never know. Our love for Bollywood goes way beyond just buying the ticket and heading for the movie. We have all at least once in our lifetime been inspired by a character’s style. But have you ever wondered what happens to the costumes when the films are over?

Some actors take the outfits home, some are worn off screen, and some lie in the storeroom of a production house. Most of the times the iconic outfits are auctioned online for an exorbitant amount of money. At times the costumes are stored and rehashed for other films.

Ayesha Khanna, a designer at Yash Raj Films had mentioned in one of her interviews:

“At Yash Raj, all the costumes are stacked in petis. Each peti is labelled so that you know exactly for which film the lead stars, supporting cast and the extras wore the clothes. Later, for another film, things get mixed and matched.”

She added on:

“Aishwarya Rai’s Kajra Re item number outfit from the 2005 film Bunty Aur Babli was used on a background dancer in Band Baaja Baaraat in 2010. It was mixed and matched. The choli was worn with another ghaghra, so it was impossible that anyone will notice it.”

If the costumes are designed by a celebrity designer, the outfits are taken back with them.

We’re saddened by the fact. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments below.
