India Runs On Jugaad And This Jugaad Takes A Lot Of Creativity, Mr. Steve Wozniak

Like everything that happens these days, something said by a celebrity has now snowballed into a festival where everyone is busy flinging mud at each other to come out at top. And with our jugaad, we’ll definitely end the argument here.

Steve Wozniak, also called The Woz, is Apple’s cofounder and one of the pioneers behind the development of technology all over the world.

Asked what his views on India are and whether he thinks a global tech company can emerge from here, he said, “I am not an anthropologist and I don’t know the culture of India well enough. I don’t see those big advances in tech companies. What is the biggest tech company here, Infosys maybe? I just don’t see that sort of thing coming out of Infosys and I have done keynotes for them three times.”

In an interview with Times of India, Woz said

“The culture here is one of success based upon academic excellence, studying, learning, practising and having a good job and a great life. For upper India, not the lower. I see two Indias. That’s a lot like Singapore study, study, work hard and you get an MBA, you will have a Mercedes but where is the creativity? The creativity gets left out when your behaviour is too predictable and structured, everyone is similar. Look at a small country like New Zealand, the writers, singers, athletes, it’s a whole different world.”

We do understand where he comes from though. He is probably looking at our largely satisfied middle class where the situation in our country doesn’t allow youngsters to ‘explore’ their options. When there are mouths to feed, aspirations take a backseat. That trend is now changing with the new ‘start-up’ culture in our country.

But are we really that bad in creativity? No. Definitely Not.

India runs on jugaad. For the uninitiated, jugaad refers to a ‘hack’ where the desired results can be seen by utilising the resources at our disposal in a different way. Here are a few examples:

Khaali bottle se machhar bhaga denge hum.

Kal kuchh toofani kiya tha.

Tumhare mehenge headphones kho jaate hai, but this is alag level ka setting.

Ek cooler, 2 rooms. Bohot nainsaafi hai…

Entrepreneurship bhar-bhar ke hai yaha.

Hamari sadko pe roz Final Destination type ke log mil jayenge.

Chappal chori se 100% bachne ka tareeka.

We can have soup with a fork. So yeah, fork you.

Steam kar diya poora…

Run-outs ke liye gazaab intezaam!

Bachelors ki roti.

So, yeah Woz. We love you for what you’ve done for technological advancements but your skewed idea of creativity has led us to put up this post. For a country that’s still trying to make its own niche on the World platform, we get creative in our everyday lives. To understand our creativity, you’ll have to look at our streets.
