8 Hollywood Movies Inspired By The Most Ruthless Serial Killers
While murder remains one of the most depraved acts a human being can commit against another, you have to admit, diving deep into the mind of a serial killer to see the madness behind it does offer a certain guilty thrill.
As you sit safely on the other side of the screen, here are some movies inspired by the worst murderers in history to satisfy your intrigue.
1. The Deliberate Stranger
Killer: Ted Bundy, portrayed by Mark Harmon
American serial killer Theodore Bundy was often regarded as handsome and charismatic, and he used both traits to win his victim’s trust and carry out his crimes. Around the 1970s, he kidnapped, raped, and and murdered numerous young women. He sometimes revisited his secondary crime scenes, performed sexual acts with the decomposing corpses and kept severed heads as mementos.
2. Helter Skelter
Killer: Charles Manson, portrayed by Steve Railsback
In 1969, Charles Manson lead his followers on a murder spree that left 5 people dead. One of the victims was actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant at the time.
3. The Snowtown Murders
Killer: John Bunting, portrayed by Daniel Henshall
John Bunting had a deadly mission: He wanted to rid the world of its “waste.”
But he couldn’t do it on his own, so he lured other people into his deadly scheme that stretched from 1992 to 1999, claiming 11 lives. Eight victims were found in six acid vats, their de-fleshed and dismembered bodies hidden in a bank vault.
Killer: Jeffrey Dahmer, portrayed by Jeremy Renner
Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer raped, tortured and murdered 17 male victims. He also confessed to eating the hearts and livers of some of his victims, and so came to be known as the Milwaukee Cannibal.
Killer: John Wayne Gacy, portrayed by Mark Holton
Convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering 33 boys in Chicago between 1972 and 1978, Gacy was one of America’s most notorious killers. The most disturbing part of Gacy’s story is that he’d often volunteer as a clown at a local children’s hospital and was regarded as a model citizen. After his conviction, he came to be known as the Killer Clown. The real Pennywise, guys.
6. Wolf Creek
Killer: Ivan Milat, portrayed by John Jarratt (As Mick Taylor)
From 1989 to 1993, Milat offered Australian backpackers a place by his fire in the wilderness before stabbing them to death. He then shot them multiple times in the head.
Killer: Aileen Wuornos, portrayed by Charlize Theron
Aileen’s father, a rapist, hanged himself in prison before she was born. Her mother abandoned her as a baby. She engaged in sexual acts early on, even with her brother and eventually began working as a prostitute around Central Florida. Between 1989 and 1990, Wuornos took seven lives, claiming she killed the men in self-defence.
8. True Story
Killer: Christian Longo, portrayed by James Franco
Longo started by strangling his wife, Mary Jane, and then his 2-year-old daughter, Madison. He crammed their bodies into suitcases and then dumped them into a marina. His other two children, Zach and Sadie, he drowned by tying rock-filled pillowcases to their ankles and then tossing them into Alsea Bay.
If ever there’s a mug for “World’s Worst Dad”, it would be his, I reckon.
