On His Birthday, Looking Back At The Most Iconic Manish Malhotra Costumes In Bollywood Films
Manish Malhotra needs to formal introduction. From dressing up our stars for the red carpet to making them look like characters from fairy tales on their weddings, he has been doing it all!
Manish got his first break in 1990 with Juhi Chawla’s ‘Swarg’ and the man hasn’t looked back since then. It’s been 27 years since he has been blessing the industry with style and glamour. It was during ‘Rangeela’ when Manish proved how exceptional his creativity of style and fashion is. He designed the look for Urmila Matondkar in the movie and it defined the character in just the right way.
On his birthday, let us take a look at some of his most iconic designs for Bollywood!
1) Rangeela, 1995
This movie helped Manish bag his first Filmfare award for the ‘Best Costume Design’ and we are not surprised. Manish gave Urmila a look that wasn’t quite in sync with what was going on in the industry during those times. She wore miniskirts and boots and let’s not forget the knotted shirts.
The movie changed the trend that Bollywood had been following. From dance moves that we had never seen before to reinventing traditional looks with Madhuri’s dresses, the movie gave us all. Dressed in chiffon blouses and European trousers, Madhuri graciously carried her look and let’s not even talk about the boots and metallic skirts with crop tops that Karishma slayed in the movie.
The movie brought along fashion trends that the nation followed for years to come. From Kajol’s tomboy look along with those hairbands that stayed with us all through our childhood to Shahrukh’s GAP sweatshirts, the movie played a crucial role in our fashion choices while were growing up. It would be unfair to not talk about Rani’s shift dresses and tennis-inspired minis.
We are just going to start off with how Poo in this movie defined swag, style, and glamour. Her jackets and skirts along with the iconic red dress that she wore for the college party, we remember all of it. Apart from the fashion diva that she portrayed, let’s not forget to talk about the amazing peach lehenga that she wore on ‘Karvachauth’.
What happens when the former Miss World is dressed by the man who defines FASHION? Well, we were blessed with ‘Desi Girl’ and it changed our idea of sarees. Priyanka stole the show in a gold swimsuit and her saree styles gave a whole new meaning to dressing traditional but with the right amount of sexy.
The industry was going to witness the new generation of future superstars so their clothes had to be perfect. Manish made sure that Alia was everything every 20-year-old wants to be with all those pretty hairbands and amazing bags. Varun’s look was in accordance with his character in the movie with perky t-shirts and Sidharth was given leather jackets.
I swear to God, I would agree to get married if I get to wear the same lehenga as Anushka Sharma’s from ‘Ae Dil hai Mushkil’. That lehenga was what dreams are made of and only Manish could have made something like that happen. Also, let’s this moment to appreciate the come back of Mrs. Bachchan with her look in the movie. All those coats and bags that Aishwarya donned in the movie proved why she has been the most beautiful woman alive.
