The Singers of Dev D’s ‘Emosanal Attyachar’ Are NOT Who We Thought They Were

This one Dev D song was the highlight when it released in 2009. Emosanal Attyachar dominated the radio and sound waves.

Emotional Atyaachar was written by lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya and the music was by Amit Trivedi. The vocalists of the song, however, remained a mystery to date. It has been 9 years and we know the singers were Band Master Rangeela, Rasila because that is how the filmmakers credited it.

The song when it appears in the film famously features Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The whimsical lyrics and the vocals go very well together and still has a high recall value.

Here’s the thing though, we’ve been deceived.

The singers were not Band Master Rangeela, Rasila after all. They never were, they were a fictional band.

Amit Trivedi wanted the song to be sung by two Qawwali singers. He even demoed the track with a sample of his and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s vocals as an example. However, they did not bank on Anurag to like the sample track in those exact voices. Anurag insisted that they lend their voices.

This is what Trivedi revealed of the song.

“Anurag got angry saying ‘Why do you want to change the voice?’ I said ‘but this is just a scratch version, I and Amitabh are singing. He said, ‘this is exactly what I want!’ Amitabh was scared because he wasn’t singing in his normal voice. We tweaked it a little bit and made our voice caricature-ish. And Amitabh wanted to be a singer so he got scared. He said ‘I want to be a singer and if this is debut I won’t get work.’ We got scared. So we changed the name to bandmaster Rangeela and Rasila. So, yes, we are them.”

Shocking right! It is like learning Santa Claus was fictional.
