Depression is something that deserves a lot of attention.

Alia Bhatt

Bollywood’s realistic portrayal of mental illness was seen in Dear Zindagi. Alia Bhatt’s character seeks help from her psychiatrist which was played by Shah Rukh Khan. The movie tried to break that stigma around mental illness and seeking help. According to WHO, over 5 million Indians are suffering from depression. There are many celebrities who lost their battles with depression and ended their lives. Recently, there have been many instances where celebrities have come out and had the courage to speak about it.

#1 Shah Rukh Khan

Bollywood’s King Khan has his share of ups and downs. The mega superstar went through depression post his shoulder surgery in 2010. This is what he said about it:

“I feel so much healthy and refreshed from within — due to the injury and the suffering I had got into a depression mode but now I am out of it. I feel happy and boosted with energy.”

#2 Anushka Sharma

The actress who ruled the Box Office in 2016, had her experience with depression in 2015. In an interview with Vogue, she opened up about her anxiety.

“I have anxiety. And I’m treating my anxiety. I’m on medication for my anxiety. Why am I saying this? Because it’s a completely normal thing. It’s a biological problem. In my family there have been cases of depression. More and more people should talk openly about it. There is nothing shameful about it or something to hide. If you had a constant stomach pain, wouldn’t you go to the doctor? It’s that simple. I want to make this my mission, to take any shame out of this, to educate people about this.”

 #3 Deepika Padukone

The actress fought depression during the shooting of Happy New Year. The fact that Deepika came forward and started her own foundation that deals with mental illness, is truly commendable. The actress had this to say:

“I did not want to be in the situation I was. I wanted to come out of it desperately. As they say that every solution is within your own self, I found the strength within me and also the people I had around who made me believe that I can rely on them.”

 #4 Karan Johar

The successful director and producer spoke about his struggle with depression on NDTV with Barkha Dutt.

“I have read people speaking openly about their depression. There was a phase in my life, when I was really depressed. When I went through that phase, I thought I am getting a cardiac arrest.  I felt it in middle of a meeting two and half years ago, after which I left the meeting in between saying I have something urgent to do and rushed to the doctor. He then said I am having an anxiety attack. I went to a psychologist post that. Then I realized that I had some internal issues to deal with, which got built up to such point that it resulted into anxiety.”

#5 Parveen Babi

The late actress committed suicide after a long struggle with depression and schizophrenia. There are reports that suggest the actress had quit movies to be treated in the U.S.A. Unfortunately, depression took away the beautiful and talented diva.

Depression is real.
