Most of the celebrities have certain endorsements, events, social media sponsored posts, if nothing else. There are people with sharp acting skills and sharper business minds. They grab all the limelight on the screen and also laugh their way to the bank with their intelligent business ventures. They are not just great entertainers but even better entrepreneurs.
1. Shahrukh Khan
Not many people know that India’s biggest Visual Effects Studios is owned by Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan. Christened as Red Chillies VFX, the unit handles the special effects of all his home productions and of some other movies as well. The company has won a National Award for its special effects for the 2011 movie Ra.One. KKR is the richest and the most financially successful IPL team. He also holds 26% stake in Kidzania.
2. Shilpa Shetty
She co-owns the mobile company Vivaan Mobiles. The actress-turned-entrepreneur who has an enviable body, also recently co-authored a book–The Great Indian Diet–with fitness expert Luke Coutinho. Shilpa established Satyug Gold and called it one of her most ambitious ventures. Shilpa also involved herself in real estate by setting up grouphomebuyers.com, touted to be India’s first real estate e-commerce platform to help home buyers buy property, in 2011. She also owns spa and wellness chain IOSIS in 2009 and a club.
3. Suniel Shetty
Sunil Shetty is an Indian actor, hotelier, producer and fashion and liquor boutique owner. Suniel Shetty owns ‘Mischief Dining Bar’ and ‘Club H20’, in Mumbai. Both the places are running successfully. He also has a 50 percent stake in Hakim Aalim’s salons.
4. Sushmita Sen
She owned a restaurant named ‘Bengali Mashi’s Kitchen’ (sadly, it’s now closed) and is the founder of an NGO called ‘I Am’. Sushmita Sen has her own venture called Sensazione which plans to set up hotels, lounges and spas. She has also started her own banner (Tantra Entertainment Pvt Ltd) and the first movie was Rani Laxmi Bai (on hold).
5. Twinkle Khanna
After leaving the acting profession in the same year, Twinkle ventured into interior designing and is the co-owner of ‘The White Window’, a chain of interior designing stores which operates in Mumbai. She is the co-founder of the production company, Grazing Goat Pictures, and has co-produced six features including the Marathi language drama 72 Miles.
Twinkle Khanna is a popular columnist at Daily News and Analysis after hours and The Times of India. She is also a writer and has published two books, ‘Mrs Funnybones’ and ‘The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad.’
6. Salman Khan
In 2011, he launched his own production company, called ‘SKBH Productions’ (Salman Khan Being Human Productions) ‘Being Human Foundation’ is a registered charitable trust set up by Salman Khan for helping the cause of the underprivileged. He has invested an undisclosed amount in Gurgaon-based online travel company ‘Yatra.com’ picking up a little less than 5 per cent stake in the company.
7. Ajay Devgn
Devgan’s production company, ‘Ajay Devgn Films’, was established in 2000. The company’s first film was Raju Chacha. In 2015, Ajay Devgn has also started a VFX company called ‘NY VFXWAALA’ named after his kids, Nysa and Yug. He also owns a ticket booking website known as ‘Ticket Please’.
Showing his support for environment-friendly causes, Ajay Devgn has invested in a state-of-the-art solar park in Gujarat. The solar project located in Charanaka, Patan District in Gujarat is a joint venture between Roha Group and him.
8. Deepika Padukone
Deepika as a teenager played badminton in national level championships but left her career in the sport to become a fashion model. She soon got offers to play in the movies and she never turned her back from there. Padukone collaborated with the fashion portal Myntra to launch her brand ‘All About You’. In a 2015 interview, Padukone spoke about her personal experience of overcoming depression, and in October that year, she formed a foundation to create awareness on mental health in India, named ‘The Live Love Laugh Foundation.’
9. Abhishek Bachchan
Abhishek Bachchan bought the Pro Kabaddi League franchise team Jaipur Pink Panthers and co-bought the Indian Super League football team Chennaiyin FC in 2014. Jaipur Pink Panthers won the first ever championships held in 2014. Chennaiyin FC won the ISL 2015.
10. John Abraham
In the active portfolio, the core investment is his production house—JA Entertainment—which has produced films such as Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe and Rocky Handsome. Abraham owns 90% stake in NorthEast United Football Club, an Indian Super League football franchise based in Guwahati. He believes football will grow exponentially while cricket will grow incrementally or may even stagnate. Oh, he also owns JA Fitness, a gym chain.
