10 Makeup Basics Explained For Newbies And Confused Boyfriends

Makeup can seem like a pretty intimidating subject for a beginner. But I promise you it’s not. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be amazed by what it can do.
Here’s are the bare basics, in case you find yourself lost in the aisle.

1. Primer

From creating a smooth base to combating shine to making everything else last longer, Primer is a life-saver, especially in extreme weather.

2. Foundation

Foundation evens out your skin tone and conceals any subtle discolourations, making it appear flawless.

3. Concealer

It’s a product specially formulated for covering blemishes and can also be used to brighten and even out your under eye area.

4. Setting Powder

Setting powder, unlike what you’ve been led to believe, is actually an essential step in your makeup routine. It stops you from looking (and feeling) like a greasy slice of pizza, and also seals your makeup and provides a smooth surface to work with.

5. Bronzer, Highlighter and Blush: The Contouring Trio

Foundation evens out your skin tone, but it does away with the natural shadows and highlights on your face. Bronzer helps you bring back depth and adds dimension to your face. Similarly, highlighter brings out areas of your face and gives you a dewy complexion.
Blush adds the natural flush of colour and warmth back to your face.

6. Eyeshadow

A sweep of an eyeshadow across your eyelid adds a subtle pop of colour. Using a base shade, a highlight shade and contour shade, you can create a wider variety of looks.

7. Eyeliner

Eyeliners enhance the shape and colour of your eyes. The technique of application differs according to your eye shape.

8. Mascara

Mascara formulas are typically designed to enhance the length or volume of your eyelashes, instantly making your face appear brighter and livelier.

9. Lip Liner

Lip liners keep the lipstick on your lips by creating a barrier that prevents the colour from bleeding or feathering.

10. Lip Color

There’s a whole wide variety to choose from in this section – gloss, tints, creme sticks, and stains. Each one carries a different level of pigment and so differs in the consistency, finish and staying power.
