Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Might Just Roll Into The Marijuana Market
Say whatever you want to about Baba Ramdev, the man knows one important thing – weed is pretty awesome and so is making money.
Granted, some Indian politicians are slowly willing to consider the herb for its medicinal properties. Which is probably why Patanjali, Ramdev’s native brand might be looking into the marijuana market. In fact, while speaking to Quartz, India, the company’s Chief Executive Acharya Balkrishna said –
“In Ayurveda, since ancient times, parts of cannabis (hemp), for instance, have been used for medicinal purposes. So, we are looking at various formulations. We should ponder over the benefits and positive uses of the cannabis plant,”
Considering Patanjali is trying to compete with multinationals that sell Ayurvedic products in India, it makes sense they would take business cues from MNCs in countries where marijuana has been legalized. Further, there are many who argue that India inherently had nothing against the drug, but banned it after the USA criminalized it.
But hey, medical marijuana is a great first step in creating access to a substance way less harmful than alcohol. Not only has it been found to ease chronic pain of terminal patients, but has even succeeded in making more money for the government. They should ideally love weed, if only for the extra revenue.
Medical marijuana alone accounts for 0.2 % of Canada’s GDP for instance.
So here’s to a possible future where we can stroll over to our neighborhood medical and buy some soothing greens for the evening.
