These Were The Best Indian Actresses Who Made Bollywood Tolerable For Us 2017

Ah, Bollywood. Every year we think that our year at the movies was terrible, but maybe next one will be better. But next year turns out to be more of the same

There’s one more common theme- every year we think that the position of women in our industry is changing, that they are FINALLY getting author-backed roles. But more often than not, that has also proved to be a false dawn.

Having said that, there were a few Bollywood films, that had a woman in the pivotal role. And the actresses in question delivered. Let’s have a look at all the actresses who delivered memorable performances in 2017.

#8 Ileana D’cruz

2017 will always be remembered as the year Ileana truly came into her own. Sure, she only appeared in masala fare, like Mubarakan and Baadshaho, but she more than held her own, in two very different genres. This writer, for one, sees potential in her.

#7 Richa Chaddha

Her Bholi Punjaban act can never grow old for me. She is one of the best reasons to watch the Fukrey series. Also, she was great in Inside Edge, the Amazon Prime web series.

#6 Swara Bhaskar

We won’t blame you if you haven’t seen Anarkali Of Aarah. But you should watch it, for Swara Bhaskar.

#5 Zaira Wasim

The young actress continued her streak of gutsy performances, after Dangal. Here, in Secret Superstar, she was the focal point. And boy, did she deliver!

#4 Sridevi

In a year full of rape revenge dramas, Mom was arguably the best. And Sridevi is always a delight!

#3 Vidya Balan

Sure, Begum Jaan was a damp squib. But Balan shone in that film as well. But towards the end of the year, she stole our hearts with Tumhari Sulu, playing the role of a middle class housewife who suddenly becomes an RJ, to perfection.

#2 Bhumi Pednekar

This actress is so refined that it doesn’t feel like she is only 3 films old. Her two performances this year- Toilet-Ek Prem Katha, and Shubh Mangal Savdhan- were layered and nuanced.

#1 Ratna Pathak Shah

Her ‘Buaji’ act in Lipstick Under My Burkha was my favorite performance of the year- man or woman. She channeled her inner sexual energy to perfection, whilst playing a woman who has societal obligations as well. A winner through and through.
