Bollywood’s Biggest Producers Answer Why Movies With Big Stars Flopped In 2017
It was a year plagued with sub-par plots and the audiences letting the industry know about how they feel about it.
Bollywood has always been a money making behemoth that has been at the pinnacle of the entertainment industry. The way our Hindi film industry has blended art with commerce for so many years, has set a very high benchmark for the rest of the country.
This year, we saw the digital medium cutting into the revenue generated by theatrical releases. With a diminishing box-office track-record and below par quality of movies being made this year, the audiences have hit the industry exactly where it hurts — their pockets.
To understand this lack of quality movies, we’ll have to take a look at some of the biggest movies that released this year. Rajkummar Rao can no more be considered a pioneer for ‘alternative’ cinema and hence, we can look at Newton as a mainstream movie. Except Newton, and Lipstick Under My Burkha, none of the mainstream movies were worthy of being considered ‘good’.
It was a bland year that was marred with controversies over the N-word of Bollywood – nepotism and the Hrithik-Kangana debacle. The Padmavati controversy was more because of the politics around the movie and had little to do with the actual film.
In an interview with Film Companion; Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor, Ronnie Screwwala and Ritesh Sidhwani discussed this alarming trend. You can watch the video here.
